The Department of Assamese was started in the establishment year of the college in 1988 with Arts stream. The founder teachers of the Department were Late S.K.Kalita, Dharmeswar Bora, Phanindra Ch.Thakuria, Jugal Ch.Baisha, Dr.J.Devi, Dr. Bimal Majumdar, Dr. J. Barman and Jamuna Mali. Later on Sewali Medhi and Dr.Prosanta Bora joined in this Department. Of course Dharmeswar Bora, Phanindra Ch.Thakuria, Jugal Ch.Baisha left the college . Other than Dr. Bimal Majumdar left the college to take up other assignment in Nalbari College. it was upgraded to a full-fledged Department with the opening of the Post Graduate Course in 2015-16. Besides, Dr. Rumi Das, Mrs. Nilakshi Medhi, Mr Ayodhya Ram Adhikary also served as teachers in the Department for short periods of time.
At Present Dr.J.Devi, Dr. J. Barman and Sewali Medhi and Dr.Prosanta Bora are the permanent faculty members of the Department. Beside this Dr. Romen Thakuria, Ms Sangita Nath, Ms Lina Mazumdar, (Alumane) are engaged as guest faculties in the Department. The Department of Assamese is a full-fledged Department with four permanent teaching staff along with guest faculties. The Department of Assamese (UG & PG) has a well – established academic track record of having production of more than Six hundred of graduates with Assamese Honours. The faculty members are all well qualified and library facilities are of high standard. The objective of the Department is to impart quality education and to make the students successful in every sphere of life. The Department has four well equipped rooms for PG classes and Teachers’ Common room. Laptop, Almirah, and Departmental library etc. are some of the important assets of it.
Dr. Jahnabi Devi, Associate Prof. has acquired the Guideship from Gauhati University. So far, 5 (five) scholars have been awarded PhD Degree under her supervision.
Every year, Seminars, Workshops, Group Discussions, Field Studies, Educational Tours etc. are being organized by the Department. Other than these, for the improvement of writing skill of the students, wall magazine, celebration of different events, are being regularly carried out and the students are inspired to participate actively in all events.
The vision of the Department is to motivate the students to enrich their knowledge on Language, Literature and Culture of Assam and neighbouring state also to make students understand the diversity, tradition, custom, manner and heritage in order to conserve the socio-cultural environment of the state along with India and abroad.
The Mission of the Department is to develop Assamese language, literature, culture and to arouse national sentiment, social duties and responsibilities work culture, and to undergo physical and mental development of the students.
The Department is to impart knowledge on Language and Literature through innovative teaching and learning, and also to create awareness about Literary Theory, Trends in Literature and its History and also language diversity of North-east.
1.UGC sponsored National Seminar on The Present Trends and Status of Assamese Literature and Other Modern Indian Literature : A Comperative Study held on 16th & 17th October, 2015.
2. A Webinar on World Pandemic Literature held on 09-07-2020 jointly organized by English and Assamese Department.
